Ilford Rapid Fixer (previously known as Hypam) - probably the standard for all darkroom monochrome fixers. Mix 1+4 for film and 1+9 for paper - working solution keeps well and can be re-used. This is the 500ml concentrate - there is also a 1 litre bottle. Normally used at 68 degrees F (20 degrees C). Full instructions included.
Fixer does not oxidise and therefore stores well even when diluted to working strength.
TIPS:
For film strength fixer, use the exposed leader of a 35mm roll as a way of testing freshness. Agitate the leader gently and time how long it takes for the film to clear completely: the fixing time is usually recommended as at least twice the clearing time. Once the clearing time at the recommended temperature rises to 1 minute or more, it is better to start with fresh fixer.
Always use fresh fixer for papers if you intend to use subsequent toning.
Avoid lengthy over-fixing of papers as this can start to bleach the image.
If you have more than one print in the fixer tray, ensure regular agitation to avoid the papers 'sticking' together and fixing unevenly.
