Ilford ID11 is one of the classic monochrome film developers, suitable for a wide range of emulsions, and capable of being used at varying dilutions to modify the fineness of negative grain. We generally recommend ID11 for convetional technology films in the medium ISO range, such as Ilford FP4 Plus and Ilford HP5 Plus. It is a suitable developer for 'pushing' films to higher EI ratings (eg rating HP5 at ISO 800 or 1600) - achieved by extended development. ID11 provides a good balance of fine grain and edge sharpness. It is generally considered to be virtually identical to Kodak D76.
This packaging makes 5 litres of stock solution. It is recommended that this should be mixed at one go and decanted into 1 litre or 2 litre containers. Mixed developer will keep best in full containers, preferably stored in a cool cupboard. If stored as powder in a cool, dry atmosphere, the chemicals have a virtually limitless lifespan. Once mixed, we would normally suggest a shelf life of around 1 year for full containers properly stored. The main danger to stored liquid developers is from oxidisation (ie air getting to the chemicals). This can be significantly reduced (and therefore the life of the developer extended) by using Tetenal's Protectan spray, which is available from our store. The usual tell-tale sign of oxidisation is discolouring of the developer (from clear to straw colour through to murky brown). Once the developer starts to discolour, treat with care: it is always safer to make a clip test first where important films are concerned.
