This auction is for one CD ROM containing a user manual, service manual, 2 schematics, 2 reviews (one when the radio was first introduced in 1984 and the other years later) for the Icom IC-735 transceiver. All of the information on this comprehensive CD is available on the internet, but it’s a handy reference to have all in one place to learn about this transceiver. All of the files are in PDF Format (Schematics are JPEGS) and are menu accessible from the menu that pops-up when the CD tray is loaded.
This radio was in production from 1985 until 1991, a very long time for a ham radio transceiver. Most models from Kenwood, Icom or Yaesu are superseded every couple of years. This means if you’re interested in buying a used one, there are plenty to pick from out there.
The main modification to the IC-735 is to TX from 160-10 meters—easy to do, just clip the two diodes lying on top of the processor unit after removing the top cover. The weak points regarding this radio are that the clear plastic cover that closed in front of the slide controls fell off and became lost or broken, and transmitting on AM is the pits. Maximum output on AM is about 20 watts, and if you try to do more than that, the signal sounds horrible.
The IC-735 will do a great job on SSB driving any of your (big) tube type amplifiers like the Heathkit SB-220 or SB-200, but don’t direct key those amps with the 735 (or any newer solid state xcvr’s for that matter). You’ll blow the little reed relay in the 735 to smithereens. This warning is discussed on the CD showing a “commercial” solution, but you need to have some kind of buffer between the two—either another relay or a current blocking circuit,
