INDIA 1822/35 RARE POSTAGE BOOK. TIPPERAH JAIL HOSPITAL
1822 to 1835. A very RARE manuscripted outbound mail posting book. 6" x 8", 115 manuscript pages, with about 1,800 named entries. On T. Edmonds Brittannia, 1821 watermarked paper. Boarded cover and spine in extremely poor condition. Badly scuffed, torn and eaten by mites. The pages are clean and legible, with some mite holes. The book has no hint of its origin. The front plate missing completely. But it was indeed brought back from India by Surgeon Simson of Ashkirk ( Selkirk , Scotland ). Surgeon Simson was initially commisioned to Jyepore in 1822. So one can rightly or wrongly assume that this book was the posting book from the hospital at Tipperah Jail. Confirmation of Surgeon Simson's posting is evidenced in a jail plan and a letter from the Marquis of Hastings and Sir Walter Scott ( neither of which is included with this ebay item. ) The columns within the book give details of the names and locations, within and outwith India, where the mail was sent, and the corresponding postage charges in Rupees, Annas and Pies. With Service personnel's mail being free of charge. All the fine historical details are there. Some only of the pages are scanned for perusal.
Many, many notable military names of the day are noted, along with some less well known civilian names. The book and the names have not at all been fully researched, that we leave up to the buyer.
Ship names, for the conveyance of mail, listed:- Lady Augusta Greenock Medway Resource Providence Isabella George Home Columbus Princess Charolotte Duke of Lancaster Florentia Albion and the Othello. Some of the above ships were also used as Australian Convict ships.
A listing of some, only, of the notable military personnel listed as being sent mail from the hospital:- Ensign AG Scott Lt. Wotherspoon Lt. RW Wilson Captain J. Stewart Lt. I. Moodie Lt. AG Scott Captain Grant Lt. Craigie Captain Decluzeau Captain D. Riddell Captain J. Hagan Lt. WA Ludlow Lt. Hunter Captain John Augilo Captain Home Dr. A. Smith Dr. Thomas Derver Dr. A. Applebey Major John Low Lt. Johnson Lt. C. Farmer Lt. Shakespeare Captain W. Barnes Ensign Ferris Captain C. Dixon Captain Barnett Lt. G. Murray Ensign A. Deas Captain Wilson Captain Johnston Lt. Of the above, a couple of noteworthy names are Major CP King, OC 4th Regt, Light Cavalry, Nusseerabad. And Lt. Tytler. Who went on to be awarded the Victoria Cross in 1858, and become a renowned Ornithologist.
But possibly one of the most important names to stick out ( without going into any great depth with the above names ) is Lt. Craigie, who's stepdaughter was the renowned Lola Montez, from County Sligo, Ireland. She was at one time the mistress of Franz Liszt. In the mid-ninteenth century she danced her way across three continents leaving a trail of scandal, dead husbands and a monarch dethroned in her wake.
Addresses also to members of the 29th Regiment of Foot, the 56th Regiment and the 65th Regiment of Foot.
Many of the names within the book can be found in Henry Beveridges book A complete history of India, civil, military and social. Plenty of scope for further research on the book and its contents.
Such a very fine RARE detailed informative and important historical document of literally great significance.
A true howling One Off rarity.
