LOT DETAILS: 24045

A very fine and large piece with important historical & political significance - this is a sterling silver Standish complete with its 2 original and heavy cut glass inkwells. Both stand and inkwell lids bear the armorial of the Cecil family and the stand has engraving 'Presented by the 'Salisbury' Habitation (Bishops Hatfield) of the Primrose League, to the ruling councilor Lord Robert Gascoyne-Cecil on the occasion of his marriage 22nd January 1889'. So was owned by Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, aka Viscount Cecil of Chelwood, son of Lord Salisbury (who was 3 times British Prime minister). Robert Gascoyne-Cecil was a politician in his own right and also won the Nobel peace prize. Fully hallmarked for London 1888, made by Walter & John Barnard. Condition: In overall superb condition, no dents, some very minor fleabites to the glass, no significant chips etc. There is some residue to the glass interiors which we have left intact. The flat area of the tray has some minor movement at its rear if pushed from underneath but its just where some of the original soldering had perished, nothing at all major.
