Here we have a huge triple tea chest from the Victorian period 1837 era framed in the neoclassical tradition, it measures 340 x 150 x 160H.
The veneering is in red mahogany, the craftsmanship is superb with no veneer loss or repair, it has a scallop shaped escutcheon in mother of pearl with a key for aesthetic purposes only.
It stands on large bun feet. The hinges are of the stand open type allowing the large lid to stand in a vertical position whilst the occupant gets to the tea container etc.
The canister lids are of solid red mahogany with delightful shaped ebony knobs. There are still remains of the old metal lining where the tea was stored.
The original padded lining is still present to the underside of the lid which acts as a cushion if the tea poy or knobs of the tea storage area happen to touch the lidded area. With added glass bowl.
It has beautifully turned ornate side carrying handles.
The patina is of excellent quality built up over it's long working life. Of large size & delightful form which would grace anyones collection.
These boxes were deceptively simple when in fact they were a feat of craftsmanship.
