After doing a lot of research online, I decided to buy the Hoover SteamVac at our local Wal-Mart Supercenter.

I used it today and was truly impressed. It took me about 10 minutes to put together, so I was able to use it right away. It did an excellent job on my living room carpet and on my steps. I used the recommended pre-treater on the heavy traffic areas and on some unidentified spots and I was able to get my carpet much cleaner than I ever expected. I was very surprised at how easy it was to use on the steps. The hose on the attachment allowed me to reach to the middle of the steps from the top, so I only had to move the machine once to clean the entire flight. It was also not a problem to carry up and down the steps.
