Chipping Ongar is a small market town in Essex, England. It name originates from Medieval England with the word Chipping meaning (Market), originally spelt chepynge and with a more specific meaning of 'long market square'. Ongar was an old English word for ‘Hundred’. In the context of Chipping Ongar it is thought that it refers to an area of land containing roughly a hundred homesteads, which was capable of supplying a hundred men under arms. So Chipping Ongar was a medieval market town with military importance.

In support of this theory there is still evidence in the form of a moat and bailey of an 11^th century Norman castle on the town borders.

The parish of Greensted is very small but is of significant historic importance in that it is home to the oldest wooden church in the world. Its true name is St Andrew’s but locals refer to it as Greensted Church, and should you ever find yourself in Essex, England it is well worth a visit. It’s tiny, but full of character and history.
