Viewing Reflection Holograms

This type of hologram is called a Reflection Hologram and the easiest way to display a reflection hologram in domestic surroundings is simply to hang it on a wall with a ceiling spotlight playing on to it at the correct angle from above, to obtain the brightest image - just as if it were a picture.

If the sun is shining and you’re holding the hologram, hold the hologram at eye level, with your back to the sun, then tilt the hologram until the bright holographic image appears. The best type of electric light illumination is from a small narrow-angle 50 watt low-voltage halogen spotlight; the worst type of illumination for a hologram is a fluorescent light.

As you can see from the advert, it is very difficult to take a sharp photograph of a hologram, as part of the image is called a 'real image', apparently projecting out from the surface of the hologram and auto-focus cameras are uncertain how and where to focus on this three-dimensional image, as a result the hologram looks blurred. In reality, with a bright, single spotlight as recommended, or the sun illuminating it, the image is clear and sharp

The hologram film, on which the image is formed, is 5 inches (12.7cm) X 4 inches (10.1cm) although the viewable image is slightly smaller as it is masked by its mounting frame, which has the overall dimensions of 10 inches (25.4cm) by 8 inches (20.3cm). As the hologram image is formed on a special photographic film, it is important that the hologram is kept in a dry environment and to keep sticky fingers away from both the mount and the hologram, it is dispatched in a polythene sleeve
