Overall size of sheet 1000mm x 890mm, folded 135mm x 226mm.

Each of the second series of Past & Present maps is centred on a city or town and covers an area of 17km x 17km using four Ordnance Survey mapping series to cover four different periods: the mid 19th century, the late 19th century, the1920s and the present-day. All four maps cover exactly the same area. To achieve this, the three historical maps have been enlarged from their original inch-to-the-mile to match the 1:50,000 scale of the present-day one. The addition of the familiar National Grid on all four maps enables easy comparison across the four time periods. Historical notes and details of the original maps used are also provided. All in all, comparing the past with the present has never been easier!

Cassini maps are ideal for anyone who has interest in the history of their area and wishes to trace the changes that it has undergone since the Industrial Revolution. Some aspects have changed almost beyond recognition, while others have hardly altered. These maps help you see them all. Digitally enhanced, enlarged, exactly matching present-day OS Landranger® maps and immaculately printed, there has never been a better way of discovering the landscape of the past

IF YOUR INTEREST IS AROUSED BY THIS MAP, PLEASE ALSO SEE OTHER MAPS AVAILABLE IN THIS SHOP:

Cassini's Historical Map series covers the whole of England and Wales. It is based on Ordnance Survey's one inch to the mile (Old Series) maps, published between 1805 and 1874. This was the first accurate national survey and records a time of momentous transition from an agrarian to an industrialised society.

A central feature of the Historical Map series is that the originals have been combined, re-scaled and re-projected exactly to match Ordnance Survery's modern-day Landrangers®. They even have the same map identification number and the same British National Grid references. This enables direct comparison of the past and present in a way not possible with maps of different specifications. They are the same size as the Landrangers® when open or folded and have a similar laminated colour cover.

Whether you're a local historian, a genealogist, a student, a walker or someone with a general interest in the history of your area, these maps will be a valuable addition to your library. Although often hidden behind unfamiliar names or buried under concrete or tarmac, the past is all around us and waiting to be discovered. Cassini's Historical Map series will help point out the way.

Cassini Maps (formerly Timeline Maps) is a company specialising in sourcing, scanning, digitally enhancing and re-publishing historical maps in a variety of formats. Their aim is to produce maps of the highest quality which are also relevant to current-day research needs.
