This auction is for an ICL barcode scanner incorporating a Melles Griot hene laser with PSU and assorted optical parts as shown below.  This unit is a gold-mine of parts for the laser experimenter, incorporating a laser and power supply, a rotating line-scan system, and several first-surface mirrors which are useful for this and other types of lasers, e.g. YAG, diode and DPSS.  A high sensitivity photo-diode and many other useful optical and electronic parts are inside.  To save on postage costs, we also offer the laser and high-voltage power supply separately.  Please see our other auctions.

  • The laser will be tested prior to shipment.  All other parts are "as-is" and NOT TESTED

  • The complete scanner unit may be in working order, but will NOT have been tested.

Important, please note:  These units have come to us from a major UK retailer, where they were in daily use until a recent P.O.S. upgrade.  The condition varies from reasonably clean, to rather dirty.  The unit you receive may be a dirty one, but the laser will still have been tested.  The optical parts shown below are protected by a sealed internal enclosure, and will be CLEAN, regardless of the external appearance of the unit.

Laser unit operates with the following voltages applied:

  • Red:  +24V (Pin A)

  • Black:  0V (Pin E)

  • Orange:  0V (enable, Pin B)

  • Yellow:  N/C (Pin F)

 

The 1mW laser is a surprisingly powerful light source.

Beam Quality

Diffraction rings around a central spot are visible in this deliberately over-exposed photograph.  The rings are clearly visible to the naked eye and are not an artifact of the camera lens.  The laser was positioned 10 meters from the screen.  The central "dot" is approximately 15mm diameter.

These rings are a demonstration of the superb optical quality of the beam.  Diode lasers rarely have the beam quality required to do this, due mainly to the poor quality of the collimation lenses in common use.

 

With care, helium neon lasers can be used for holographic experiments.  The high beam quality and single-line output spectrum are necessary parameters for this application.  Diode lasers are not usually suitable for the production of holograms.
