I acquired this ikat sari in the 70's. It is unworn. The red , green and gold colors mean that it was a wedding sari and part of a brides' dowery. The sari is from the Gujarat rejion of India and is completely woven by hand. The design is created by tie dying the silk BEFORE weaving and then creating the pattern. The metallic thread is golden and may be pure gold or silver covered with gold (vermeil). I have not tested it. But precious metals are often woven into these textile masterpieces. The textile measures 12 feet by 3 feet. |
