Early 19th Century Inlaid Mahogany Tea Caddy
Some objects deserve to be described as handsome, and this caddy is one of them. Its proportions, design and quality of materials make it stand out in any company and it is of a good size, measuring approximately 11w x 6d x 6h (all measurements are in inches.).
As can be seen in the particularly fine grain, the choice of timber was made with care. The whole piece is in good condition but, over time, there has been some minor shrinkage evidenced in the lid and some crossbanding. This does not detract from the impact of the good colour and deep patina that has been acquired over the years. Decoration is achieved by the use of a satinwood escutcheon, oval handle on top and lion mask ring drop handles on the sides. These are probably original. The quality of the hinges can be seen as they are designed to prevent the lid falling fully back. The lock appears original but, sadly, there is no key to test the working of the mechanism.
Inside the caddy the two removable canisters each have oval lids. They have been decorated in a similar style to the exterior of the caddy, with cross banding, and embellished with a burl wood cartouche in their centre. The hinges are sound and the containers are in good condition. The mixing bowl is made of glass and has been engraved along its edge. Since its style is sympathetic to the piece and it fits perfectly into its aperture, such that the surround lies just below the visible engraving, it is possible that it might be contemporary with the caddy. It is the final detail that makes one think that this caddy has changed little in the last hundred years or so and makes a comment on its overall quality.
