Fac 51 The Hacienda

An original piece of the most famous dance floor in history

Sprung Canadian Maple specified by Ben Kelly

May 1982 – June 1993

One of these pieces with my paperwork is currently on display at the Manchester Museum.

You are bidding on a piece of the Hacienda dance floor which was made of tongue and groove sections of Canadian Maple. Your piece measures 16” long. The front is dirty and scratched; most of the varnish has been ‘danced’ off – you may want to wax it before framing. The back was never varnished.

In late 1992 a customer’s foot had gone through the dance floor. The floor was beginning to rot and needed replacing to the tune of £10,000. There was no money to pay for this and after much discussion at various Directors’ Meetings Tony Wilson suggested we rip the floor up, cut it up into 1000 pieces and charge £10 a piece. In June 1993 the floor was ripped up & replaced. We sold, in total, 15 pieces of it!

Please note that this is a genuine Hacienda item you are bidding on. I was the manager of the Hacienda from 1989 to the end of 1996 – you can confirm this by checking the index of ‘The Hacienda Must Be Built’ for my job title and dates. I am selling this with my mate Ed Blaney who was in Trigger Happy during this period. This piece of floor had been stored in their practice room in The Hacienda Round House.
