A lovely little early edition of this superb work. It measures approx 17cm x 11.2cm x 3.3cm. Bound in half leather with five raised bands to spine, and cloth covered boards. The cloth is a touched foxed and grubby. The leather extremities are scuffed and worn, and the corners a little bumped. The leather is cracking ever so slightly to the top either side of spine. Internally, the lemon yellow endpapers, to the front and rear, are a touch grubby, and there is a small red spot to the rear fixed endpaper. The frontispiece portrait is foxed and has pale staining to edges. The rear blanks are foxed. The main body of contents have some scattered foxing, the odd light grubby mark and corner crease. Else the main body of the contents are clean and tight. May be missing a half title page, we are unsure.
There is a frontispiece portrait, and a couple of engraved plates, a route map and a couple of smaller illustrations within text.
A fascinating work, with much detail about South America, people, their customs, manners, geography, flora and fauna, wild life, and touches on such topics, as coffee, tobacco, poisons, climate, the Amazon, Orinoco, geology, etc, etc, etc.
Chapter headings include - CUMANA, INDIANS OF NEW ANDALUSIA, CITY OF CARACCAS, VOYAGE DOWN THE RIO APURE, VOYAGE UP THE ORINOCO, VOYAGE FROM CUBS TO CARTHAGENA, STATISTICAL ACCOUNT OF NEW SPAIN, MINES OF NEW SPAIN...to name a few.
