HUGE Brass Bound Walnut Writing Box. C1860.

Throughout November I will be listing the widest variety of boxes that I ever listed within the space of one month. The vast majority of the boxes will exceed most in terms of condition and/or quality. Something to please all tastes from the popular styles through to VERY rarely seen pieces that are worthy of viewing if only to marvel at the skills required to produce such pieces of art. VERY large mid 1800’s brass bound campaign style writing box in VERY good condition. Measures approximately 20” x 10” x 6 ½”.....They don’t come much bigger!!  Unspoilt patina. Attractive grain. Four inlaid corner pieces to each of the uprights AND inlaid brass straps that extend down the full depth of the back rather than stop short at the back edge of the top. Inlaid brass cartouche and escutcheon. The condition of the veneer is exceptional with no missing or replaced pieces to the interior and exterior!!  (No chips even alongside the hinges) In additional all brassware is original and a replacement working key is supplied. Top closes perfectly square. Both generous sized storage areas beneath the two slope surfaces are in VERY clean condition and there are none of the usual shrinkage splits on the base board. The quill and inkwells are not included though as per usual, the inkwells are available as an optional extra at £30 the pair. (Sometimes can be obtained for less on eBay and many bidders prefer to seek genuine antique inkwells....best to have the option). The leather slope surface has been professionally fitted, all fold lines have been strengthened as was the practice when the box was made and the leather has more in the way of both blind and gilt features than usual so as to enhance the appearance. Other than the leather and key the only aspects that are not original on this box are I believe the knobs of the small lidded section and on the secret drawers......all do match. Access to the drawers is via the usual method of raising the divider between the stamp slope and inkwell sections. The mechanism is in excellent working condition and the panel that conceals the drawers opens on a good healthy spring. A very large and imposing writing box in a condition that is far above the norm for boxes of this style and period.
