This is an absolutely superb antique French chateau passementerie tassel tie back that date from the late 1800s. It is a huge tassel with a stunning hand worked open petalled flower top.
It is the most wonderful work of art being all hand worked in silk.
The look is one of opulent faded grandeur and it is a genuine period piece.
Although such pieces were produced to dress large pelmets or to tie back curtains, this one and the similar ones I am listing all came from the same bourgeoise "maison de maitre" where they had been used to hold chandeliers! The wire had been threaded down through the cords and came out of the base of the tasseled fringes.
The wires have now long gone so it could be used for any decorative project and could also make a stunning bell pull.
The large tassel end measures :
8" long (20cms) and is approx 5" across (12.5cms) at the frothy end.
The top of the tassel has beautifully intricate lattice overlay in silk cords.
The open petalled flower is an amazing confection of woven silk cord and is strong enough to be opened out as required and the petals remain in place. The flower measures 5" high (12.5cms) and approx 5" across at the top edges.
The long twisted cord ties is solid and strong.
The overall length from the top of the open petals to the tassel end is 4 feet 2" (127cms).
The tassels are heavyweight, solid and strong. The colours are soft blue, pale saffron gold, russet and cream.
A Stunning old design piece for any period project.
