Did you know,
The bouzouki is a stringed instrument first introduced from Greece into Ireland in the Sixties, a time when Irish traditional music was undergoing great experimentation. So although a relative newcomer to Irish folk music it has also be warmly accepted by musicians looking for a new sound to give there music the edge
A few craftsman developed it further by using different woods and affecting alterations to the string arrangements such as the Bailey and the Abennett Bouzouki.
But it was the prototype that Donal Lunny first commissioned while a member of Planxty that was to become known as the Irish bouzouki that is so popular today.
Normally tuned G-D-A-E (an octave below mandolin or violin), with octave strings on the G & D, for a brilliant Chorus effect. Also very effective in G-D-A-D and other open tunings.
The bouzouki was picked up by irish musicians travelling abroad and adapted for their use by retuning to GDAE. Modern makers like Hudson then started producing them with flat backs which made them almost identical to the octave mandola. The crucial difference is the scale length, which is slightly longer.
There is a fashion in bouzouki playing now to experiment with slightly different tunings rather like guitar players do (see The Irish Bouzouki) which is to be commended. The Irish Bouzouki has a bright and open sound, and is easy to hold and has a distinctive sound that cuts through when played with other acoustic instruments.
Today the Bouzouki is found in many forms of music including Rock and Blues and experimental. String players, like guitarist seem to adapt easily to playing the Bouzouki.
