Jean Fraser
Traditional Scottish Dyes & How To Make Them
Natural dyes from the plant world

Jean Fraser is a real expert, but she shows you simply, how these dyes vary according to local geology & plant distribution, using natural, easily obtainable ingredients. Most of the plants are not only common in Scotland, but throughout Europe, North America & many other parts of the world.

Scotland has a long tradition of using natural plant dyes, used for its tweeds & tartans. Old methods are still used, but only by a small number of the older generation. This inspired the author to gather the old plant dye recipes together, before they vanish. Most of them are practical & easy to use.

  • This is my favourite book on natural dyeing & I have managed to obtain a later, smaller copy, so I am able to offer this original a new home.
  • The first 20 pages give general advice about dying. The rest of the book details 75 plants, in alphabetical order. Each plant has a charming illustration & details about how to obtain various colours from that plant.
  • Over 100 pages packed with useful information & lots of detailed illustrations.
  • Well written & easy layout to read.
  • Listed as "used" but in good condition. There is a small area of fading to the cover, which has not shown up on the photo.
  • This auction is for one book.
  • Paperback, published in 1983, by Canongate.
  • Size approx. 7" x 10¼" (17cm x 24cm).

Bidding starts from just 1p.
