Mabel Ross
The Essentials of Hand Spinning
Everything You Need To Know To Get Started & More

Every aspect of spinning, from the selection & preparation of raw fibres & the various spinning techniques. This comprehensive guide describes, in detail, how to produce high quality yarn, using both the drop spindle & the spinning wheel.

  • Mabel Ross is one of the gurus of spinning. In this very concise book, she tells you just about everything you need to know about spinning, to get started & to progress, without any waffle.
  • The book starts with an explanation of wool fibres & quickly progresses to spinning with a spindle, followed by cures for the most likely difficulties.
  • The next section explains how to make rovings, ply & skein your finished yarn. There is also a very easy way to select the best size knitting needles for your finished yarn.
  • Next comes very detailed instructions for carding, followed by a very good guided tour around different types of spinning wheels. Of course, this progresses into clear instructions on how to use them & correct any problems.
  • The final sections give a useful guide to woollen & worsted yarns, finishing yarn, excellent tips on knitting hand-spun yarn, advice about choosing a spinning wheel, selecting & preparing a fleece, glossary & a quick reference faults & remedies chart.
  • 40 pages packed with useful & concise information & easy-to-understand step-by-step instructions, all accompanied with detailed diagrams.
  • Well written & easy to read.
  • This book will enable a complete beginner to master techniques, while intermediate spinners will be able to identify cures for any imperfections in their work.
  • The fact that the book has been re-printed 16 times is an endorsement in its self.
  • Condition is very good but it has been handled so it is not sold as mint. There are a couple of very small marks on the front cover, which do not show in the picture. There is also a small discreet label on the bottom corner of the back cover, from the original supplier. The pages are unmarked.
  • This auction is for one paperback book.
  • First published in 1979, revised in 1981 & again in 1984 (this is the 1984 revised version, 1986 reprint).
  • Size approx. 5¾" x 8¼" (14.5cm x 21cm).

Bidding starts from just 1p.
