The Sikorsky Sea King flew for the first time in 1959, and was introduced into the US Navy in 1961. It was designed for ship based use from the outset. The 5 bladed rotors can be folded to reduce the space taken within the ships hangers. The main function was submarine hunting, but was also used against shipping, Search & Rescue, transportation, communication, and early warning. The Sea King was replaced in the US Navy in 1990 by the SH-60F Sea Hawk in the roles of ASW & SAR, but still remains in service for other tasks. The Sea King was manufactured under license in the UK by Westland Helicopters Ltd; a specially modified version was developed for the British Royal Navy. This variant has British Rolls-Royce-Bristol-Gnome turbines and British avionics and ASW equipment. The British Sea King flew for the first time in 1969 and was introduced a year later. It was also used extensively worldwide by the Royal Air Force. Variants were manufactured under license in Japan and Italy. Armament and equipment of the Sea King vary with the particular application. A typical armament consists of four torpedoes, four depth charges or two missiles either Sea Eagle or Exocet. In SAR mode, the cabin has space for 22 survivors bunks or nine men and two medical personnel. As a troop transporter it can carry 28 men. The boat shaped hull allows the helicopter to land on water, and be maneuvered by use of one of its turbines.
