Description: A fine maritime scene watercolour on artist's paper, signed "H. Middleton" and dating circa 1930 - 1940. Framed - approx 18 X 24 inches (45.72 X 60.96cm). This is a fine English School watercolour dating from the 1930 - 40 period. The maritime scene depicts a calm almost 'Monetesque' scene of sail boats moored in the harbour. The calm waters reflect the colours of the boats and the sails, glistening on the glass like sea, gulls flying in the foreground. The boats are painted with wonderful russet sails set off against the blue washed sky, images of buildings in silhouette in the background. To the right further boats quietly make their way inland. A fine and pleasing painting with wonderful muted tones. The work is signed "H. Middleton" lower right.
Date: The watercolour probably dates to around 1930 - 1940.
Framing: Contemporary plain moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt. The watercolour is mounted on board and has a gilt mount.
Condition: The painting is in generally good condition, with a few minor marks, of little significance, consistent with age. The frame has a few chips and dings to the gesso work, this again being consistent with age.
