Politics to the fore as US punk pop band release Know Your Enemy, 21st Century Breakdown and American Idiot as stage drama. 

American Idiot, had been 3½ years in the making. The record had been mixed and mastered, then mastered again. And still Armstrong couldn’t call time. A new song, Murder City, was inserted in the album’s 17-track running order. Green Day’s record label wouldn’t admit to anxiety, but you could see it etched and scored on its representatives’ faces. Eventually, the producer Butch Vig — who manned the controls on such era-defining albums as Nirvana’s Nevermind — had to take Armstrong aside. “He said,” recalls the singer, “ ‘Okay, now it’s time to let this go.’ ...”
