What else might I need when buying a stove?

    Chimney Liner Kit

If you are installing your stove into an existing chimney there are a few things that you need to consider. The first one being whether you are going to line your chimney or not. Lining your chimney has many benefits and we advise all potential customers that they should have their chimney lined.

The reasons we advise this are multiple. Through our experience we have come into contact with many figures in the industry, from sweeps to fitters, manufacturers to sales reps, and we have spoken to them all.

Chimney sweeps - both the chimney sweeps we use in our area cannot recommend lining your chimney any higher, especially if your home is built before 1950. They advise this as WITHOUT a liner you MUST sweep your chimney twice a year for safety reasons. A traditional brick chimney was not designed for the modern, efficient stoves that we see today. The efficiency of the stoves means that there are more tar deposits in the gases and these gas are burnt much hotter causing condensation. This condensation and tar will bond with the brick which can cause chimney fires at the worst and brown staining of the chimney breast at best (after a year or two). The other danger is the lethal carbon monoxide gas that stoves produce. If this leaks into your house it can kill, especially if the chimney breast runs through a bedroom. The sweeps do smoke test chimneys but you cannot get accurate results unless the chimney is tested under pressurised, scientific conditions, and even when this is done (at great expense) you still cannot be sure if it is leaking between floors or ceilings.

Manufacturers - All the manufacturers that we have spoken to have expressed that their appliances run at their optimum when used with a liner. This is because all stoves, when designed and trialled are tested with a liner set up in a laboratory.

What do we say? - Apart from all the above there is a less technical way to look at it. Quite simply, if you line your chimney, you will have a chimney that is guaranteed for 10/20 years, without a liner there are no guarantees on your chimney and it is your responsibility to put right any problems. Secondly, using a liner means burning more efficiently which means that you use less wood, saving you your hard earned money!

How do I or my installer install a liner? Please see the below diagram:

You can find a range of chimney liner and accessories in our eBay store.

    Enamel Stove Flue Pipe

This is used to connect your stove to the flexi liner adaptor through the register plate. You must work out what length of pipe you need. Make sure you pruchase the right diameter for your stove.

    Chimney Register Plate

The register plate is used to close the gap between your stove and your chimney, the stove pipe is passed through it and connected to the flexi adaptor.

    Fire Cement

You must use fire cement to seal any joins between pipes, adaptors, stoves and register plates. This is a putty which goes hard with heat.

    Adaptor To Flexi Liner

The flexi liner adaptor connects the enamel pipe to the chimney liner

    Flexible Chimney Liner

This chimney liner lines the chimney and protects it from the stove's hot gases. We have many kits available in our eBay shop.

    Pot Hanging Cowl

The pot hanging cowl supports the liner and is attached to the chimney pot on your chimney.

(You can also use a top plate and clamp to secure the liner.)

No Chimney? No Problem! You need:

    Twinwall Flue

A twinwall flue system is used when you do not have a chimney or you want to place the stove away from your chimney or in a different room. With a twinwall system you are basically building a chimney for the stove in your house except without the major structural upheaval of building a new chimney stack.

There are two ways in which you can build a twinwall system. The first is to go from the stove, up through the floors and then out of the roof. This method can be done in any house although is more commonly seen in single storey buildings. If you use this method, be aware that if you have more than one storey, there will be a flue pipe (not too hot) running up through one of your rooms.

The other method is to take the flue system out of a wall and up the outside of the house. Whichever method you choose, there are many parts and regulations to consider. For advice on which parts you need to purchase or how to build your system within regulations, feel free to call us on 0161 928 9081.

You can find a range of chimney liner and accessories in our eBay store.

    Enamel Stove Flue Pipe

This is used to connect your stove to the twin wall adaptor through the register plate. You must work out what length of pipe you need. Make sure you pruchase the right diameter for your stove.

    Fire Cement

You must use fire cement to seal any joins between pipes, adaptors, stoves and register plates. This is a putty which goes hard with heat.

    Single to Twinwall Adaptor

This is used to connect your single wall stove pipe to your twinwall system.

    Twinwall Pipe

Depending on your installation you may need an assortment of lengths of twinwall pipe. Most common lengths are 250mm, 500mm and 1000mm

    Adjustable Lengths

For trickier installations (such as through walls) you may need an adjustable length of pipe.

    Bends & Tee Pieces

Depending on the complexity of your flue arrangement you may need to use an array of angled bends and tee pieces. If you would like us to design your system for you do no hesitate to get in touch.

    Locking Bands

Locking bands secure the attachment of pieces of pipe together and must be used at every join, even where the raincap connects.

    Ventilated Firestop Plate

A firestop plate is used on the ceiling where the system enters. The pipe passes through the firestop and the firestop is attached to the ceiling.

    Ceiling Support

The ceiling support secures the weight of the system at the bottom within the ceiling beams. It is very similar to the roof support that does the same job but at the top of the system.

    Pitched Firestop

The pitched firestop is used when the system passes through an angled, wall or ceiling.

    Roof Support

The roof support secures the weight of the system at the top within the roof rafters. It is very similar to the ceiling support that does the same job but at the bottom of the system.

    Flashings

Flashings seal the system as it passes through the roof to make it weather tight. They come in different pitches and materials depending on your roof pitch or type.

    Storm Collar

The storm collar protects the seal between the flue pipe and the flashing and makes sure that the system is extra weather tight.

    Wall Support

The wall support holds the weight of the system if you decide to take the system up the side wall of the house. You can also buy adjustable wall supports depending on how far away from the wall you need to mount the system

    Adjustable Wall Support

Adjustable wall supports can be adjusted depending on how far away from the wall you need to mount the system

    Rain Cap

The raincap prevents water from entering your flue system. You can also buy specialist cowls, for instance to stop birds or downdraught.

    Heatproof Sealant

Always useful to seal up any gaps and make sure everything is rain proof!

    Powder Coating

We can powder coat your system any colour you like, it could be to match your stove, the side of the house or just to take the shiny finish off the flue.
