Greek large Red Figure lekythos depicting the goddess Nike

A fine quality large black glazed pottery lekythos with an ovoid body and decoration in the Red Figure technique with a figure of the goddess Nike flying above a funerary stele and holding offerings in the form of an alabastron and a small spherical object.

The painting of the figure is of good quality but the balance and composition of the scene is particularly pleasing and demonstrates the work of a confident painter. It has been suggested that this lekythos may be attributable to The Eretria Painter.

The photographs of this lekythos are not very complimentary and do not do full justice to the quality of the painting or potting.

Greek, Athens, 425-400 BC

Size: 18 x 10 cms

Repaired from multiple pieces with some restoration (less than 5%). All areas of the figure decoration are original except where fragments meet and the joins have been filled-in; the very top left corner of the stele has been re-painted.
