Small Easter Island Head - Granite Grey
Product Summary
Easter Island Heads / Moai StatuesIt is widely believed that the inhabitants of the Polynesian Island of Rapa Nui, (Easter Island), carved 'Moai Statues', or Easter Island Heads, between 1250 and 1500 to commemorate their ancestors. The first European to lay eyes on one of the imposing figures - described as heads given their disproportionate appearance - was the Dutch explorer Roggeveen in 1722. When Captain Cook landed just over 50 years later, many had been toppled. The largest of the Moai statues - which feature elongated eyebrow ridges and other enlarged features - stands over 10m tall. Their construction and transport is seen as one of the great feats of mankind. For more information on the history of the Moai statue visit the British Museum. Round Wood Easter Island HeadsThese reproductions are supplied exclusively to Round Wood Trading following the decision to commission and develop a design that, whilst remaining portable and practical, does justice to the original Moai Heads on Rapa Nui.This has been achieved through casting and sculpting with a frost-proof, malleable concrete and fibreglass composite that allows for a thick layer to be crafted around a hollow mould. The result is a range of Easter Island Statues, (including the largest available on a non bespoke basis at 126cm), that weigh less than their smaller reconstituted stone/concrete counterparts. A fibreglass mesh interwoven into the composite ensures that the innovative production process does not sacrifice durability. Colouration is achieved through hand staining in layers. The finish may dull or patina over time, depending on positioning, but this only serves to enhance the natural, authentic finish.
