Georgian Mahogany Cube Tea Caddy
This is a very satisfying item which measures approximately five inches in each dimension. Its austerity suggests that it was made more with function in mind than decoration, but even so the craftsman could not avoid putting his own stamp on the piece to raise it above the mundane.
All the indications are that solid mahogany was used in the construction of the caddy. Care was taken to choose timber with a fine grain and, over the years, its colour has been enriched and it has gained a lovely, deep patina. Decoration is provided by the moulding of the corners and the shaping of the plinth base. There is also a tear shaped escutcheon and a small, axe head, drop handle has been placed on the lid. The lock looks to be original and is provided with a key. Remarkably there is no sign of significant damage anywhere on the outside of the piece and only those marks that might be expected, in an object of this age, can be seen by close inspection.
Opening the lid reveals the two compartments for storing the tea. Their small size reflects the cost of tea at the time. Throughout, including the lid, the interior is lined with lead, which is largely intact. Probably made before tea caddies were designed to be items of furniture, this little caddy demands respect. The quality of materials and craftsmanship ensure that it is available to us today.
Shipping cost will be $19 to UK and $55 to US.
