Giant pumpkin seeds - variety Heidi from the Sugababes

This is my prize winning pumpkin from my local show this September which weighed in at 119kgs or 262lbs in old money (19stone). I nicknamed it Heidi after the blonde one in Sugababes!

At the Malvern Autumn Show in September 2008 two farmers broke the European record for a pumpkin at 1341lbs. I cheekily sent them a letter begging a few seeds and they very kindly sent me some by return. I subsequently grew these seeds and planted them out on my allotment  hoping to have a 100 pounder. Within a few weeks of planting I contracted swine flu and for over a month I was not able to get up to do the watering and plant management that is necessary to get big pumpkins. I have no doubt that if I had been fit and well I could have grown a 4 or 500 pounder. When i did manage to get over to see how things were going in mid August I was amazed. You could see the difference in growth more or less daily.

Growing a big pumpkin is huge fun but you do need plenty of room....say 6m x 3m.....and make sure you have plenty of help when it comes to lifting. It took 4 of us to get this into the back of my pal's 4x4 to transport it to the show. Since show day it lived in my back garden and then I carved it for Hallowe'en in the shape of a hideous monster eating a smaller pumpkin and set it on a couple of supported planks in my front garden.....it was a huge hit with the trick or treaters and cars were stopping for days afterwards outside my house to take photos.

Sadly, it is now on the compost heap but not before I managed to get the seeds out of it. I am selling these for £2 for 3 plus 39p postage. I'm hoping to make a few quid myself but also to make a reasonable donation to charity from the proceeds.
