German School Rhine River Valley Watercolour Painting

An exquisite figural landscape watercolour on artist's paper, signed "R ?" in monogram and dating circa 1870 - 1890.

Framed - approx 12 X 14 inches (30.48 X 35.56cm).

This is an exquisite Continental School watercolour dating from the Victorian period.

The figural landscape depicts a beautiful small and finely painted view of the Rhine River or Valley. The painting has been beautifully executed, full of intereest, as two fishermen to the right, ar on a lock, one sitting fishing, the other with his rod on his back, looking to the right, the trees and foliage around them giving contrast to the flowing waters of the river, as they cascade over the weir. Central is a small town settlement, nestling beneath the mountains, with tall cone shaped pitched roofs, with a tall narrow spire of the church to the centre. To the left, standing high above the town, appears to be a monstery with many storeys and many windows. To the right the remains of a fortress or castle stand on the hillside, with a rugged escarpment below giving a fabulous dramatic feel to this wonderful landscape. This is a classic piece from the 19th Century, truly romanticist in atmosphere and a wonderful piece of art.

The work is signed "R ?" in monogram to the lower left. The watercolour probably dates to around 1870 - 1890.

The work is set off by a frame of gesso work with classic scroll and floral moulded decoration, and finished in gilt. The frame is later. The watercolour is mounted on board and has a gilt mount. The watercolour is in good general condition but there are a few marks and blemishes consistent with age.The painting has one or two minor marks, with some minor signs of foxing but generally in fine condition for its age. The later frame has one or two minor dings and pieces of moulding missing consistent with this type of delicate material. The work measures - approx 12 X 14 inches (30.48 X 35.56cm) when framed. The image measurements are- approx 5 X 7 inches (12.7 X 17.78cm).

The successful bidder is to pay a handling/shipping charge. The handling charge covers postage, packing, shipping and Five Star Insurance. This charge is non-negotiable. We will reduce the handling charge for multiple purchases that can be shipped together. The handling charge does not apply if goods are collected directly from us.
