Georgian Sterling Silver Tea Service

Made at 19 St Bartholomew Close in London, by William Bennett, in 1806/08

A Very Good Large Georgian Tea Service.  Made by in London, in 1806/08, by William Bennett.  A Heavy Teapot with a superb walnut handle and finial.  The matching  Two Handled Sugar Bowl and  Cream Jug of similar quality and weight, with Gilt interiors.  All of Oblong form with part fluted bodies and gadrooned rims. On four ball feet. This is a very pleasing service, unusual wide proportion, nice plain area of silver. There is something in the style which is somehow nautical, perhaps the boat like form of the upper rim. The stretch of the sugar is particualry pleasing. Gilt in good order in both cream and sugar.

William Bennett apprenticed to John Arnell of Little Britain London on the 7th July 1784. Then became the apprentice of the very respected Soloman Hougham. First Mark1796. Often mistaken for William Bateman, this master silversmith better known for trays and salvers. Making this a RARE service well made and formed by a good maker.

Condition:

The Marks:  Good.  Makers mark worn on jug and bowl.

The Tea Service:  Good.  The Teapot, sugar bowl and cream jug both with dents.  The teapot has a crest removal the size of a five pence piece and a couple of small old repairs to the rim. also tiny splits on spout..

  • WB
  • Lion passant
  • Leopards head
  • Date letter L/M
  • George head duty mark
