Georgian C.1820 Mack Watercolour Painting Horse & Rider

Description: An exquisite figural landscape watercolour on artist's paper dating circa 1820 - 1830, framed - approx 38 X 48 inches (96.52 X 121.92cm). This is an exquisite signed English School watercolour dating from the Georgian period. The figural landscape depicts a large and magnificent classic English School romanticist artist's impression of the stunningly beautiful countryside. To the left a copse of oak and ash trees stand tall, casting their shadows across the path. Central the figure of a woman, in long dress and blue bodice, wearing a hat, sits side saddle on her horse, carring a basket, the horse gently ambling through the woodland on a hot summers day. To the right a slender tree stands before a mound of rocks where goats are resting. In the distance on the lower lands of the valley, two figures converse, one holding a horse, beyond which a small cottage nestles beneath the rising hills before a small lake. A beautiful composition, a classic country house piece, impressive and very decorative. The painting is signed with an indistinct signature (see third photograph) and appears to read "L Marx" or "L Mack" with a possible smaller raised "t" at the end.

Date: The watercolour probably dates to around 1820 - 1830.

Framing: Contemporary classic scroll and floral moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt. The watercolour is mounted on board.

Condition: The watercolour has mellowed with age, as is to be expected, with a little discolouring to the sky area and a few minor marks, otherwise in remarkably good condition for its age, with a little fading only adding to character and authenticity. The large frame has a few chips, dings and pieces of moulding missing, again adding to character and authenticity.
