Description:
An excellent townscape, watercolour on artist's paper, signed , and dated 1850 and framed - approx 14 X 12 inches (35.56 X 30.48cm).

This is an excellent English School watercolour dating from the Victorian period attributed to George Howse.
The townscape depicts a classic mid 19th Century view of the "Old Gate in the city of Chichester", the wonderful turretted stone arched tower forming part of the Medieval city walls of this historic location. Beautifully painted, the study is flanked by multi-storied jetted buildings towering above the figures below, going about their daily business. Central are a grey and chestnut carthorse, waiting patiently for their master. Beautifully painted with clever use of light and shade, this is a classic original composition from a bygone era.
Date:
The watercolour is dated margin.
Artist Biography:

Attributed to George Howse (Brit. 1800 - 1860) - Architectural and landscape painter. Accomplished and much sought after artist from the mid 19th Century, one of his most famous works being "Figures unloading fishing boats on shore".
Framing:
Later plain moulded Mahogany. Finish: Mahogany.
The watercolour is mounted on board and has a off-white mount.
Condition:
The painting shows some discolouring with age, namely to the sky area, this only adding to character and authenticity. Generally the watercolour retains good colour for its age, with a little mellowing. The artist's paper shows a little rippling beneath the glass. The frame has a few chips consistent with age.
