I guess my dad has given up digging a mine under his house to try and cut down on his winter fuel bills as he's selling off his nice collection of mining memorabilia.
 
Here we have a beautiful old mining barometer, made by the famous Negretti & Zambra of London. Incredibly sensitive as the hand even changes by going up small flight of stairs. The inner dial is barometric pressure in inches of Hg, the outer dial is marked in feet with a rotating vernier which in theory can calculate a difference in height of only 1 foot.
 
Although this was made for mining, it can also be used for normal barometric readings as the scale is just extended to cover the high barometric pressures when going deep underground etc. The instrument is in very good condition considering the working environment it would have been used in, the leather case is not as good but has done its job protecting the instrument. There is provision for a small magnifying glass, but this was not supplied when the instrument was purchased. Face dia 4 1/2 inches.
