Product Description:

The JBL Permanent Test CO2 plus pH is a beautifully designed unit for attaching inside the aquarium which permanently displays the pH value or the CO2 content of the aquarium water. Two separate colour scales, one for pH and the other for CO2, are included with the unit to be attached to the pane of the aquarium, as required.

Test Principal:

An indicating device contains an indicator liquid which is separated from the surrounding water by an air pocket. Making use of a trick from physics, the indicator liquid shows the pH level resulting from the CO2 level in the surrounding water. This allows a colour value for the correct  CO2 content to be calculated. Gases have the characteristic of balancing their partial pressure (concentration) at boundary layers between water and gas (in this case water and air). The same CO2 partial pressure therefore develops in the air pocket between the aquarium water and the indicator solution as is in the water. This partial pressure is also passed on to the indicator liquid. As a result, after a little time, the indicator liquid acquires the same pH level from the CO2, as the surrounding water. The indicator changes colour according to the pH level. The air pocket is vital for the pH level to be displayed precisely, as the indicator would otherwise mix with the surrounding water and fade.

Use as CO2 permanent test:

Independent of the carbonate hardness, the CO2 level in the aquarium can be checked via the pH level arising from the CO2. On the colour scale, three different colour fields therefore display the correct colour value for the best CO2 levels for three hardness levels. First a CH test should be used to measure the carbonate hardness in order to select the right colour field for the aquarium in question. The hardness levels are shown on the colour fields e.g. if the CH in the aquarium measures 6°CH, the field marked CH 4-6 is the correct colour field for the aquarium. This means that the CO2 supply must be adjusted so that the indicator liquid shows this colour after a few days.
The field displaying +! indicates that the CO2 content is too high, possibly dangerous for the fish. The field displaying -! shows that the CO2 content is too low, providing poor conditions for plant growth.

Use as pH permanent test:

The current pH level of the aquarium, caused by the interaction of  CO2 and carbonate hardness, can be directly read and monitored using the enclosed pH colour scale. However, this only applies if there are no other substances dissolved in the water which influence pH other than CO2  and carbonate hardness. High nitrate levels, the use of liquid or powder substances to reduce or increase the pH level, or filtering through peat etc. cause shifts in the pH level which cannot be identified using the permanent test. It is therefore advisable to check the pH level of your aquarium from time to time using a JBL pH Test Set.

Instructions for use:

The colour scale (pH or CO2) is provided in two formats. The smaller one can be put directly on the transparent cover (diagram 1-6), or the larger one may be attached to the outside of the aquarium (diagram 2-7). Before installing the appliance, select the position of the colour scale.

  1. If the colour scale is to be attached to the transparent lid of the appliance, this should be done now: place the appliance on a flat surface with the suction pads uppermost. Attach the small version of the pH or CO2 scale (according to preference) level with the upper edge of the transparent lid, so that the writing is the correct way up when the lid is in position. The white field inside should remain clearly visible.
  2.  Remove the transparent lid from the bottom part and, using the syringe provided, fill with 1.5ml of aquarium water.
  3. Add 2 drops of reagent solution. The number of drops can be increased to 4 if a stronger colour density is required (brighter colour).
  4. Invert the black lower section of the appliance and attach to the transparent lid so that the white panel and suction pads face the flat, framed side of the transparent lid.
  5. Carefully and slowly turn the appliance upside down so that the black section is under the transparent lid. Take care that no liquid leaks from the slit behind the white panel.
  6. With the appliance upright and the black section at the bottom, attach to a pane of the aquarium in a clearly visible position so that an air pocket remains under the black lower section. The distance between the appliance and the surface of the water should be approx. 10 cm.
  7. Attach the colour scale (larger format) for pH or CO2 on the outside of the aquarium near the appliance.

The correct pH level or CO2 level can be read by comparing the indicator colour on the appliance with the colour on the scale.

The indicator will slowly fade with time due to the lighting. We therefore recommend refilling the appliance once a fortnight when the regular partial change of water is carried out. At the same time any algae coating etc. should be carefully cleaned from the transparent lid. Any stubborn algae deposits or lime scale can be removed by soaking in JBL PowerClean or JBL BioClean.
If the colour of the colour scale attached to the transparent lid should fade, this can also be replaced.
