Volume of 100 original letters and documents relating to General Robert Henry Colvile

The collection was compiled by his nephew and executor Frederick Leigh Colvile of Barton on the Heath and Leek Wotton from General Colvile's papers. The General was connected with Duffield in Derbyshire and Kempsey in Worcestershire.

Some of the items are pasted in, others are sewn in. There is some browning and staining. Most of the items are folded where they were sent in envelopes. The pages are numbered in ink to the upper right corner, but there can be more than one item per page.

Bound in full diced calf by Cooke of Warwick, the volume is titled - Original family letters. Vol VIII. General Robert Henry Colvile. The binding is now a bit scuffed.

It contains:

1. Appointment as Ensign to the Third Regiment of Foot Guards. Dated 29th December 1813. Signed by George Prince Regent + Sidmouth
Browned, spotted and worn. On vellum

2. Appointment as Lieutenant in Third Regiment of Foot Guards. Dated 6th November 1817, Signed by Prince Regent + Sidmouth.
Browned, spotted and worn. On vellum, paper seal lost.

3. Appointment as Lieutenant Colonel in the Scots Fusilier Guards. Dated 16th April 1853. Signed by Queen Victoria and Lord Palmerston. On paper, light browning. Trimmed at the foot.

4. Note [draft?] in 3rd person by Col Colvile on taking up his position.

5. Appointment as Lieutenant General. Dated 8th June 1862. Signed by George [Duke of Cambridge] On paper. Trimmed at the foot.

6. Printed invitation with ms insertions invitation to dinner with Duke + Duchess of Gloucester.

7. Appointment as Major General. Dated 10th July 1854. Signed by Queen Victoria.
On paper, lightly browned. Trimmed at the foot.

8. Letter signed Hardinge informing him that he was placed on the List of General Officers. Dated 16th March 1855

9. Letter asking if he would be willing to accept, if offered, the command of troops in Hut Barracks near Colchester. Dated 17 January 1856. Note from Colvile - answered July 21 1856 was travelling in Spain, therefore only just come to hand, regretted. Letter trimmed at the head, part of it pasted on.

10. Letter notifying him of appointment to Colonelcy of 12th Regiment of Foot. Signed George [Duke of Cambridge]. Dated 9th November 1864

11. Copy of letter dated 26th February 1868 from W Paulet refusing permission to wear the "Castle and Key" badge on their forage caps.

12. Autograph letter signed Lyttelton Dated Dec 68, suggesting that Colvile become a Deputy Lieutenant of Worcestershire.
Browned. Cutting relating to Lyttelton pasted opposite.
13. Letter signed by Lyttleton saying that he is not allowed to create any more Deputies. Dated 4 Feb 69
14. Autograph letter signed Lyttleton saying that he now hopes to make more Deputies. Dated 17 Feb 1874.
15. Letter sending Colvile a form to complete for the Deputy Lieutenancy. Dated 2 March 1874. Signature unclear.
16. Manuscript document on vellum appointing Colvile Deputy Lieutenant of Worcestershire. Signed Lyttleton. Dated 13th March 1874.

He had writen to Sir William Knollys to inform him of the death of General Colvile.  He instantly came here and saw your Aunt, he was deeply affected + told her he loved him as a brother + was going into brother's mourning for him. Your Uncle had nursed him day + night through a most dangerous illness + a true and lasting friendship existed between the two.

90. Printed invitation + ms additions - Earl of Dudley and the officers of the Queen's Own Worcestershire Yeomanry Cavalry to a Ball at Worcester.

91. Printed invitation + ms additions from the Mayor of Worcester to a breakfast on November 24th.

92. Autograph letter signed by WF Forster. 3 November 1864, marked Private and confidential. Has forwarded Colvile's name to the Queen for the Colonelcy of the 12th Regiment. It will be better that you should not mention what I have here stated until you receive an official letter from this office - as the Queen's fist is yet to be obtained
93. Autograph letter signed by WF Forster. 11 Novr 1864 marked Confidential. I hope before I leave this arduous office that the Duke will be enabled to recommend other old officers similarly situated as yourself. Small cutting mounted at the head of the letter.
94. Autograph letter signed [signature illegible Richard? Armit?] Dublin. Dated in another hand 1864. I can hardly hold my pen owing to Gout in my hand. Congratulating him.

100. Passport issued in the name of Magnus Comte de Bjornstjerna to H Colvile, Capitaine de Gardes au service de SM Britanique se rendant en Suede et en Norvege July 1829. Signed by the Charge d'Affaire. Other signatures to the rear. Damage to a wax seal to the rear has also caused a hole through the document, but clear of the text. Old reinforcements to the rear. Creased.
