Once one gets past the excessive British hype, the borderline arrogance of the rock-critic-turned-rock-star lead singer, and the questionable, faux-shocking name, what one has in Gay Dad on its debut disc, LEISURE NOISE, is a talented band whose music is driven by swirling guitars and devastating hooks. The band's music is in the vein of groups like Suede, Ride, and Ned's Atomic Dustbin, and draws from a pantheon of British rock & roll history spanning from Bowie to the Jam to Spandau Ballet. However, this is not to say that Gay Dad comes off as derivative; on the contrary, the band is able to forge its own unique identity through knowledge and use of the past. LEISURE NOISE opens on a high note with the stirring "Dimstar," a disarmingly charming anthem that harkens back to the new romantic sound of the early '80s. The album artfully marches on with the rousing "Joy" then gently tugs with the softly enchanting "Oh Jim!," a perfect showcase for Cliff Jones' smooth, controlled vocals, a close cousin to those of the Verve's Richard Ashcroft. Above all else, LEISURE NOISE stands as a testament to consistency, proving that Gay Dad is, after all the hype, simply an intelligent and talented rock band.
