Gasoline From Oil Tar Sands Claims Bowie Bureau of Mines 1922 Article

This is a page with a couple small feature articles, one of which is called "Claims He Can Get Gasoline From Tar"

"...C.P. Bowie, petroleum engineer with the San Francisco laboratory of the Bureau of Mines, today contradicted extravagant statements attributed to him by San Francisco and other newspapers concerning the efficacy of the Bowie-Gavin cracking process upon which he has been working. The newspaper quoted him as saying the gasoline output of California refineries would be increased 10,000,000,000 gallons and that if he were permitted to rip up the asphalt streets of San Francisco, he could produce enough gasoline to run the automobiles of this city in half a week.  "I did not make a statement that the Bowie-Gavin process would add 10,000,000,000 a year to present gasoline supply," he said in a statement for National Petroleum News, "but it can be made very materially to increase the gasoline supply, the process consists of cracking tars, heavy oils, residuum, etc., that contain no gasoline or kerosene products, in a new design of still and producing cracked oil yielding relatively large proportions gasoline, kerosene, and other products. Recovery of cracked oil is very high and sufficient fixed gases are produced to furnish fuel for carrying on operation so there is no need to call on oil for fuel. The process is applicable to the recovery of oil from oil soaked sands and oil shales, when market conditions warrant. The process is continuous and carbon difficulties, always a bugbear in cracking heavy oils, are overcome."

Another small piece about the "House Passes Bill to Check Stock Fakers" - May, 1 - "House of Representatives has passed the Dennison blue sky law, H.R. 10598, intended to prevent the flotation of fraudulent company securities by making it an offense for anyone to use the mails, express, telegraph, telephone or any other method of communication for the sale of securities in violation of the laws of the state in which the vendee may be living. It is aimed particularly at the hundreds of fake oil companies. It is not however, limited to them. .............."

The date appears in the upper margin, it does not show in the scanned image.
