Up for auction is a example of the metalwork by the important Belgian Architect

GUSTAVE SERRURIER-BOVY

(1858 – 1910)

The tray is made out of copper and brass parts that are soldered and screwed together. The gallery and handles are showing a square pierced decoration with brass galleries and handles and feet.

Please note that whilst doing my research on this tray, it is obvious that the ‘boat shape’ bars at each end are missing, according to the various examples I have seen on auction house websites.  However this imperfection does not detract from this being an exceptional item and much sought after.

The classic Art Nouveau design is typical of the wares produced by other artists and designers of this secessionist movement e.g. Otto Wagner, Adolf Loos, Koloman Moser and of course Josef Hoffmann.

The background of this Belgian architect is that he studied in the 1870‘s at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Liège, Belgium. Having seen the works of William Morris he moved to London where he designed Modern Style interiors. In 1884 he founded a furniture and decoration store in Liège, one in Brussels and another one in Paris in 1897 and 1899.

In 1894 he established with others the Salon de La Libre Esthétique (Brussels), in 1895 he organized an exhibition of applied arts (L’Oeuvre Artistique) in Liège.

He participated in many exhibitions in London and the World Exhibitions of Paris 1900 and St. Louis 1904.

1910 saw his last show where he exhibited his works at the International Exhibition of applied Arts in Brussels.

In good condition and has a great patina to it. It has surface scratches however these are simply through age/usage. It has some very small pin dents to the base. It has no breaks to the metal. Where the 'boat' shape bars would have been the metal has been polished - please see all detailed photos.

As I understand his wares were never marked although very well documented on the Internet and exhibited in museums.

This item would be a great addition to any Art Nouveaut / Arts & Crafts collection.

Measures just under 21inches handle to handle,  10.5inches deep and sits 1.75inches to the highest point.

Thanks for looking and good luck.

Please note that I will post five working days after receiving cleared payment unless otherwise requested, thank you.
