The Great She Bible - Folio of the King James Authorised Bible 1611

Robert Barker, London. 1611-1613. Folio. A very honest, original and unrestored copy of the Great She Bible, the second issue of the King James Authorised Edition of the Bible (Herbert 319). Bound in original blindstamped reversed calf. Missing virtually all the backstrip though a small piece is still attached and a couple of detached strips are loosely inserted. Some wear to corners. Leather to upper cover peeling but largely intact. Some minor wear and loss to leather of lower board. Rare to find this work in an original binding such as this. Leaf giving the books of both Testaments tipped into free front endpaper (creased vertically), from a similar but slightly smaller Bible. Free front endpaper with some ink notes of various previous owners and children, including Richard and Samuel Heighway, Mary Wilson, William Griffiths, J Bathgate, M Redman, Margret Rogers, etc, with 18th and 19th century dates. Blank verso of Nnn6 has name of Thomas Marston and date of 1682. Title page to Genealogies loose with some loss to margins, ink date of 1926 to one area. Genealogies 3-4, 9-34 (missing all other preliminaries) then continues A6-Ccccc6, A-Aa6. Missing Eee3, Eee4, Bbbbb3, Bbbbb4, NT title page, P5 and Aa5 of main text (seven leaves). Some waterstaining along gutter and to lower corner towards start of work. Most of the early leaves with short closed handling tears to the gutter margin from the top of an inch or so. Corner of Z5 with loss of a couple of letters. Tiny wormtrack to bottom margin of gather Zzzz, not affecting text. NT - Closed tear of 3 inches to C1. Corner of J1 with loss affecting four lines. Closed tear of 6 inches to L2 and M6. Closed tear of 3 inches to O1 and O2. Towards the end of the work the bottom corner has some wear and damage as follows - 2 inch closed tear to P1. Minor loss of a few words to corner of P2. Closed tear of 3 inches and some chipping to P3. P6 with short close tear and loss of a couple of words at corner. Q1 with short close tear and loss of portion of five lines at corner. Q2 with shot closed tear and some chipping to margin. Q3 with shor tear with loss of a few words. Q4 with short closed tear. Q5 with loss to one corner with loss a few words, and Q6 similar. S5 and T4 with minor loss to corner affecting a few letters. V5 with loss of a few words to corner. X1 with closed tear of 6 inches and shorter closed tear. X2 with loss of a few letters. X6 with loss of last letters of about ten lines. Y1 with loss of a few letters to around 8 lines. Y2 with minor loss to bottom gutter corner of a few words. Y4-Y6 loose and a bit creased down gutter margin and with loss to corner. Z1-Aa6 creased with some loss to same corner, ranging from a few letters to a few words. Overall a mildly defective copy with some damage towards the end of the NT, but priced accordingly.
