We have had three days of constant lashing rain and black skies here in Normandie so I had to use the flash to photograph this piece. Please note that the background on the photographs appears silver/ivory when it is in fact a warm and luscious  soft oyster. The close up photographs of the flower displays are quite accurate.

This is a very beautiful antique French chateau tapestry wall hanging that dates from the 1880s.

The colours are softly muted and warm and very easy on the eye.

This heavyweight hanging is a very high quality weave of silk and wool. There is a high amount of silk that catches the light so beautifully. The weave is textured to create depth within the  tapestry scene.

 Such wall pieces were designed to keep out the winter draughts in the high ceilinged rooms  as well as to be beautiful display pieces and a sign of wealth!

The tapestry features gorgeous entwined rose bloom side borders and an exquisite base display of roses, ribbon garlands, a flower filled urn  and acanthus leaf scrolls. The colours are warm, softly muted with age and very easy on the eye.

The background and central display features an oyster damask design of classical scrolls and curls with exotic blooms. This silk damask weave is elegant and timeless.

The design border colours are softly muted greens, browns, pinks lavender and creams creating a palette of faded elegance.

The measurements are:

Length 9 feet 8" (294.5cms)

Width 4 feet (122cms)

The top still has its original large old wooden curtain rings making it ready for display.

This superb old wall hanging is solid and strong with very very pale fading and very minimal wear commensurate with age. This does not detract in any way and if anything adds to the period authentic charm. 

All of the fibres are good and strong and this is a heavyweight, tight substantial weave. The last photograph also displays the reverse weave at the back.
