The swimmer, racing driver and the pilot from this series differ from the others in that the horizontal and vertical back stamps both go in the same direction (ie, horizontally).  There are, however, differences in the design of the vertical/horizontal back stamps - which allow us to distinguish between the two – even when they go in the same direction.  Furthermore there are differences in the designs of the fronts of the badges.  In the case of the swimmer the waves are different under the chin, the racing driver has different coloured stripes on the spoiler and the pilot has green/red epaulettes on his shoulders depending on the back stamp.

I hope this goes some way to explain why I refer to some of the horizontally back stamped gollies as vertical.  Also that it doesn’t give you the same amount of brain ache it gave me before I got my head around it! J
