Professor Gilbert Reaney 1924-2008 was a leading scholar of medieval and Renaissance music, literature and music theory, and in 1964 the first recipient of the Dent medal of the International Musicological Society. He studied Music and French at Sheffield University, from 1953 held research fellowships at the Sorbonne, Reading and Birmingham Universities, and from 1961 spent 36 years in the United States as a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. As an established authority on medieval musical sources and was an obvious choice for editor of the two volumes dedicated to early music manuscripts published in the Repertoire International des Sources Musicales series of Catalogues (1966-1969).

This is the second of the volumes edited by Reaney with introductory matter in English, French, and German and contains descriptions, bibliography and thematic incipits for all the known polyphonic manuscripts between c1320 and c1400, with the exception of Czech and Polish mss and Italian Ars Nova.
 A  pioneering work, the bible for scholars of medieval music.
