Maritime Military Cover: German Navy 14 May 1984 Visit to Karlstad, Sweden, MzL "Dorsch"
 
This is a cover handstamped aboard one of the German Navy's Type 520 Barbe Class utility landing craft (MzL), used for transporting and landing troops, supply, equipment, and also for coastal mine laying. There were 22 that came into service in 1965 and 1966, and they were in use until the late 1980s and early 1990s when they were mostly either scrapped or sold to the Greek Navy. All were named after fish, with the exception of "Delphin" and "Tummler" which are toothed whales. Two remain in service today with the German Navy today.

They were variously assigned to Divisions of the Landungsbootgruppe (Boat Landing Group)  which was itself part of the Amphibious Group established in 1958 as part of Nato strategy to defend the North Sea and German Baltic coast against Soviet bloc forces.
 
This particular cover marking the visit to Karlstad, Sweden, from 18 - 21 May was handstamped on board the MzL "Dorsch" and posted in Kiel.

This cover has been slit open along the top with a knife and is empty. Please see large scan (above) for detail and condition.
