Here is your opportunity to purchase an attractive and charming Gaudy Welsh Earthenware Jug. The jug is moulded in two pieces and has a rotund body. It is hand decorated with a stylised and bold floral pattern which has been applied in imari colours (blue, red and some green) on a white background. Some areas of the decoration has been enhanced with copper lustre detailing.
SIZE & MARKINGS
The jug measures approx 11.7cm (4.6”) in diameter from the tip of the spout to the edge of the handle and it is about 7.8cm (3.1“) in height. There is what looks like a sort of stylised number incised on the base of the jug, but it is really difficult to read. I think it may be ‘28’, but I could be wrong. There is also a painted blue mark, but I am not sure whether this could be a factory mark. Otherwise there are no actual factory marks to indicate where or when it was made, but many of the earlier Gaudy pieces were finished and sent out with no factory backstamp, and in my opinion this jug does appear to have some age.
CONDITION
This attractive little jug has suffered some minor damage. It has a small ‘slice’ chip on the inside top rim which has not really affected the painted border. About 2cm (0.8“) to the left of this chip is a fine hairline crack which extends about 1cm (0.4“) in length from the top rim. The painted decoration is generally quite clean and the colours remain bright and even the copper lustre is quite visible and luscious. However, the white background colour is not as bright as it should be and some areas are slightly brown in colour. This is sometimes caused by heat and can be a common problem in earthenware pieces. There is generalised fine crazing all over the jug which is only visible on extremely close inspection.
Gaudy Welsh pieces such as this jug are becoming much harder to find, so although this jug does have it‘s faults, it is still attractive piece which would make a lovely addition to any collection to enjoy as it is or perhaps restored to it‘s former glory.
