Model Summary
This model is a German prototype Focke-Wulf Triebflugel supplied in a sophisticated two tone camouflage paint scheme, with pre-painted markings including the JG7 "Windhund" emblem and a blue band on fuselage; these are typical markings for Jagdgeschwader 7 (JG7). This variant was designed for use by the Geschwaderkommodore of JG7, Major Theodor Weissenberger. The jet was ready for testing in late 1944, but never put into production by the end of World War II.
There are three different colour schemes for this aircraft to collect in the series. This model was produced by POPY (of Japan), it is nicely pre-painted and is a very highly detailed model.
A Brief History of the Triebflugel
The Focke-Wulf Triebflügel or Triebflügeljäger, literally meaning "powered wings interceptor", was a concept VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) fighter/interceptor; it was finally ready for testing in August 1944.
The three untapered wings rotated around the fuselage and had a gradually decreasing pitch towards the wingtips, thus acting like a giant propeller. At the end of each wing was a Pabst ramjet. The wings were put into rotation by small Walter rocket engines fitted to each ramjet pod. Triebflugel rested vertically on the ground, supported by its leg landing gear, plus one main wheel, which comprised of a spreadable housing with a wheel at its end. During the flight the wheels retracted into the nacelles.
The performance data, compiled on September 9th, was surprising:
Length (Height) = 9.15m (30 ft)
Diameter with rotating wings = 10.8m
Maximum take-off weight was only 11,355 lb (5,150 kg)
The rate of climb at sea level =410 ft/sec (125 m/s), and at 22,965 ft (7,000 m) a rate of 164 ft/sec (50 m/s).
The anticipated maximum speed was 575 mph (925 km/h) at sea level and 419 mph (675 km/h) at 45,930 ft (14,000 m).
The Triebflugel, with rotary wing flight and VTOL seemed so promising to the Western Allies Fighter Development programme that Focke-Wulf's development department (both Pabst and Zobel) reports remained classified until January 1955.
Model Details and Options
These particular 1:144 scale models are very accurately moulded and detailed in dense plastic resin (ABS/PVC) and painted with an incredible amount of fine detail (including accurate markings).
The model is supplied with part of the undercarriage unattached; you must assemble the other parts of the undercarriage (wheels covers etc.) cut and removed from the sprues. Some minor modelling skills are required (no painting, just cutting and a little plastic glue) in order to install the undercarriage and the three wing engines. These parts come on separate sprues (all pre-painted) and correctly moulded to fit perfectly.
Model Manufacturer Details
This is one model from a collection of 16 (including two secret models and kits) available from the Popy Projekt Flieger Volume 01 (released early in 2004). As is usual, this volume of models had a very limited production run.
The model is brand new and individually sealed in it's original plastic tray and boxed. The box has been opened in order to identify which model it is. Please Note - The models are sold randomly packed in Japan, therefore the box must be opened to discover the actual contents
These models in this scale have become very popular (and very hard to find) and certainly appeal to Wargamers, Diorama Builders and Collectors of World War Two Aviation models. They are the same scale as the Takara World Tank Museum models and look stunning in 12mm figure or "N Gauge" railway dioramas.
