A large lacquered brass presentation theodolite by Adie & Son, Edinburgh standing 14" high. The telescope measures 16" long racked in and 18" out and has a 1.5" green tinted objective lens, ray shade and dust slider to the eye-piece and is mounted over two 'A' frames with 4.5" graduated bubble level. The telescope is fixed to a 6" vertical circle with silver scales reading from 0-90-0-90 etc in four quadrants, silver verniers marked 'A' and 'B' with maginfyers, all with fine thumb screw, slow vertical adjuster, all mounted over a 6" horizontal plate with 360 degree silver scale to the outside, silver verniers with magnifyer, twin 3" bubble levels, 3.5" silvered compass to the centre with jewelled needle and fine screw and clamp adjuster. All mounted over a 4- screw tripod attachment and tripod mount with additional fine slow screw thumb wheel adjusters. With engraved lettering " Presented to Mr. John Greig as a token of Esteem from a few friends, Dalmellington Iron Works, March 1851. Adie & Son, Edinburgh ". Retaining most of its original gold lacquer with a few rub marks, it is in superb condition and damage free. The telescope gives a good, clear inverted image. There is no box. Insurance may be extra.
