Saw tooth bits feature a number of individual teeth at the cutting edge and they are used for drilling in woodworking in preference to drill bits and flat bits whenever a very clean and precise hole is required. They also enable woodworkers to drill holes without passing through the material when a clean and precise bottom to a hole is required.

We are often asked questions about Forstner bits / Sawtooth bits, and have copied them below

What is the difference between a Saw tooth Bit and a Forstner Bit?

Practically speaking nothing at all, they are both very similar. Both patterns will cut across the grain, although the sawtooth pattern is better for drilling into end grain. Technically the differences are "meant to be" that Forstner bits had a solid outer ring and a Sawtooth bit had a serrated outer edge.  I say “meant to be" because because most Forstner bits sold today are technically Sawtooth bits and not Forstner bits.  The confusion started when many companies started marketing small sizes of Sawtooth bits as Forstner bits. I think it was just companies marketing products that people knew. Although in my opinion the saw tooth bit pattern is a better pattern because it gets rid of the waste more efficiently and therefore over heats less so the bits dont burn out.

What drilling speeds should I use?

The general rule with all drill bits is the bigger the drill bit the slower the speed. The speeds we use in our Workshop on both pillar drill and lathes are as a guide:  up to 22mm (7/8th) 650rpm   25 - 50mm (1" - 2") 390rpm

Flat Drill Bits

These Flat Bits will bore all types of timber, softwood or hardwood, manmade boards, cross grain and end grain easily.

Flat Bits (also called Spade bits and Paddle bits) are the most commonly used wood drill bits, mainly because of their low cost and suitablity for both mains power and more powerful cordless drills. The centre point locates the bit on the wood, whilst the sides cut away the wood. Flat bits are used to drill fairly large holes quite quickly and are useful to drill flat a bottomed hole (albeit with a central point) for example where the head of a bolt needs to be recessed. Holes in wood are best drilled at slow speeds, because high speeds will burn out the bit.  These flat bits are commonly used for drilling joists for cable and pipes as the drill bits are a useful length. 

All Faithfull Flat bits (except the 6mm) have a non-slip specially machined hexagonal shank with a locking mechanism which is compatible with adapters or chucks with a built-in "quick release" feature.  Also a 12" extension shank is available from our Ebay Shop for use with flat bits of 16mm and above, which is ideal when very deep boring is required.

Sharpening; Flat bits can be sharpened using a fine file, oilstone or grindstone.

Tip: When using Flat drill bits, Where possible stop before you break through completely, withdraw and turn the wood over and complete the drilling from the other side, this helps prevent splintering damage to the surface of the wood.  Another good tip to use a sacrificial board behind / underneath the workpiece and drill through into this, this will also help reduce splintering. Faithfull Lip & Spur drill bits

Lip & Spur drill bits, (also called the brad point or dowelling bits) are the preferred bits for drilling wood because they drill cleaner, faster and use less energy. The Faithfull range of alloy steel Lip & Spur drill bits have by design,  a steeper twist and deeper flute to improve  waste clearance to improve the cut.

A conventional HSS Jobber drill bit has an 118 degree chisel ground tip, this will tend to wander when presented to a work piece. When jobber drills are used to drill metal, this tendency to wander is addressed by drilling a pilot hole for the drill bit to follow. Likewise for drilling wood, a Lip & Spur bit has a similar solution to a pilot hole, the centre of the bit has a sharp point (the Spur) and this point drives through the wood to keep the drill bit on line, whilst the twin sharp corners cut the wood.
