We are delighted to offer for auction this stunning 19th Century portrait by the artist F. WECKSLER, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a three quarter length portrait of a Captain in the British Army, holding a his round cap, a pair of white gloves and his swagger stick in his left hand.
As we were unsure of the rank or regiment of the subject, we contacted the Lanes Armoury, in the Lanes in Brighton and sent them a jpg of the painting with a request for information regarding the subject. They very kindly replied with the following:-
His rank is Captain but the uniform is a frock coat uniform, but used by
most officers of the army in the 19th century, and by military crown
equerries. I can see no specific regimental devices.
Mostly today they are used by Guards officers, for an occasion when the full
dress scarlet tunic is not essential. It's an intermediate uniform, part
dress, part duty uniform for service, but still used by crown equerries
today.
They also kindly sent us a picture of Charlton Heston, playing General Gordon in the film Khartoum, who is wearing exactly the same jacket only in blue, possibly because he was a general or maybe the director of the film thought it looked better in blue!

We also checked the internet and found several old photographs from the Crimean War, showing officers wearing these jackets and round caps. Please see below.

Unfortunately , we have been unable, so far, to find any biographical information on this artist, who may possibly be German, although we have checked all the auction sites, the internet, all our reference books, including Benezit. However, the painting was obviously painted by a professional hand. If anyone has information about this artist, we would be most grateful if they could contact us.
