Maasai Family Carving

Object: Carving of Maasai family in real ebony

Region: East Africa

Ethnicity: Maasai

Dimension: 47cm by 15cm by 11cm

Damage/Repair: Good condition

The entire piece has been carved from a single ebony trunk with the bark surrounding the back of the piece giving it a very natural and unique look. The level of detail in this piece is unusually high for an ebony tree carving. Each family member has intricate detailing from facial features, to jewellery, to clothing and accessories.

Ebony is a heavy, dark and black wood (incidently it is so dense it sinks in water!). Ebony is expensive to obtain due to its scarcity. Its shine and density make it very valuable in craftwork. A lot of African art is ebony immitation and colouring added can fade overtime.

The Maasai are one of the most recognisable tribes in Eastern Africa due to their strong heritage and distinctive cusoms. Their lifestyle centres around cattle and they are semi- nomadic. The Maasai have been surprisingly resilient to the influence of the modern world, however, with the expansion of cities and development their lifestyle is being threatened.

The wood has been treated.
