This is a very large and particularly imposing open bookcase. It is made in mahogany and is late Victorian dating to around 1880. It is an excellent piece. The broad top has a fine backsplat detail. The top is stepped. The corners are chamfered with ecanthus carved detail top and bottom and it stands on a plinth base with a central cutout. The shelves are adjustable. The bookcase is particularly large at 16 inches deep and 43 inches high and is 68 inches wide. The mahogany is a wonderful rich colour.
The bookcase has marks to the top - see photo and the shelves (solid mahogany and dating to the same period) - are replacements.
This bookcase came from Hawarden Castle, the lifetime home of the British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone 1809 -1898. The Castle is still owned by descendants of Gladstone and so it is a possibility that this particular bookcase belonged to Gladstone.
I don't think you will ever see as good an open bookcase as this on Ebay again. This is the sort of piece that would be tiddied out of its tiny mind and put into a London Antique shop for thousands of pounds. It is a good thing and will look wonderful when filled with books.
